Skating Attire

FIGURE SKATES:

The ice skates are our primary piece of equipment for this sport. It is highly recommended that all skaters own their own skates. Rental skates do not normally provide the level of support and quality necessary for serious skating. Even when owning your own there are different types of boots and blades for different level skaters. Proper fitting skates is extremely important for safety. There are several options when purchasing your own skates: the pro shop at most ice rinks carry many beginning level boot & blade combo skates, mail-order catalogs and websites, and boot manufacturer companies. In the Bay Area, we are very fortunate to have two boot manufacturers: Harlick in San Carlos, CA (www.harlick.com) and SP-Teri in South San Francisco (www.spteri.com). Having both companies so accessible, I highly recommended being fitted by one of their specialist before buying your next pair of skates regardless of where you are planning to purchase them. Please remember that when ordering skates they could take 10-12 weeks to arrive and then may need additional time for blade mounting. Blades are generally sold separately from the boots. Used skates can also be an option. Please see Tracey for information on how to purchase used skates and blades.
Before buying skates, please see Tracey for advice on the type of boot and blade appropriate for the skaters skill level.

Skating Attire:

On freestyle sessions practice skating dresses or skirts and tights are required. Leggings are an appropriate alternative. This gives the coach the ability to see the skater's line and allows the skaters to practice safely without restricting movement. Fitted sweatshirts or tee shirts can be worn on top as long as the length does not fall below the hip level. Multiple thin layers are recommend so the skater can remove layers as they warm-up if needed. Gloves are preferred over mittens.
Beginning skaters should dress warm. Flexible pants and sweaters are recommend. Jeans should be avoided because if they get wet, they don't seem to dry well. Mittens or gloves are also recommended. Fleece head bands or hats can also help keep the head warm.
No scarves please. They can drag on the ice or tangle which may cause a skater to fall.
If you have pockets, please remember to empty or zip them before skating so objects do not fall on to the ice.

HAIR:

Skater's hair should be pulled back into a pony tail or bun. Long bangs or loose pieces of hair should be pinned back.

ON THE ICE:

To make the most of the skater's time on the ice it is recommended to bring water and tissue with you. If you have it, also bring your program music and warm-up music. Skate guards should be worn when off the ice and left on the side of the rink when skating.

IN THE SKATE BAG:

It is always a good idea to have the following items if needed: Extra laces, towel for wiping down skates, guards, soaker (never store your skates in the guards), gloves, tissue, water, safety pins, extra hair bands and clips, band-aids, chap stick and a screw driver (for tightening loose blade screws).

MUSIC CHOICES:

Music is an essential component to the success of any program. Tracey works personally with each skater to find the best piece of music to suit the skater and program type. A great deal of time is devoted off the ice to cutting music for best effect while adhering to competition time limitations.
